Former Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has shared some intriguing comments about his new upcoming contract in Toronto.

All season long, one of the more interesting storylines to follow in Toronto has been the contract status of John Tavares and what a new deal might look like for the former Leafs captain.
Despite reports suggesting that neither Tavares nor Mitch Marner are likely to extend their contracts during this season, some comments made by Tavares this week suggest something to the contrary. Tavares told the media that he would like to get something done before the trade deadline on March 7th, if possible. He also reiterated his desire to remain a Leaf.
"If we have the opportunity to get it done, I'd love to do that. If not, when that time comes, we'll get there just looking forward to continuing my journey here as a Leaf, and obviously want it to continue past this season"
Tavares has long been a vocal supporter and believer of this Maple Leafs team, even after stepping down and offering up the captaincy to Auston Matthews. He bleeds blue and white and clearly wants to retire with the Leafs, embodying the exact type of player you want in your organization.
In an effort to extend his already illustrious career, Tavares has made changes to his off-ice routines. His efforts are clearly paying off, as he has been rejuvenated this season, posting 48 points in 50 games at 34 years old.
Tavares' impressive play has led to some outrage about his exclusion from Team Canada for the 4 Nations Face-Off in favour of names like Seth Jarvis, Travis Konecny, Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel -- a decision that highlights how many still believe he has plenty to offer.
At this point, it seems Tavares may be willing to take a discounted rate to stay in Toronto. If he does, it makes sense for him to return to the Leafs. While he currently serves as the second-line center, the Maple Leafs will continue their search for someone to fill that role, allowing Tavares to eventually transition into a more supportive role to maintain his longevity.
One thing is certain: Tavares wants to remain a Maple Leaf for as long as possible, and he'd like a deal to be done as quickly as the two sides can hash it out.
