After a hot start, Toronto Maple Leafs' top prospect Easton Cowan is officially within striking distance of the CHL record for longest point streak.

While some believed that Cowan had the ability to make the Maple Leafs outright from training camp, it was always going to be a long shot with the amount of players he had to leap-frog and the lack of ice-time he would have gotten as a result of lineup placement.

Considering the fact that he's only 19 years old and was on the bubble of making the NHL team, the Maple Leafs are in a very good position when it comes to Cowan's development. Another year in the OHL with the always dangerous London Knights is not a bad consolation prize.

To start the season, Cowan has 6 goals and 10 points in 8 games to go along with 38 shots on goal for the 8-4-0-0 Knights. He is currently 2nd on the second on the team in goals and tied for third in points despite missing 4 games. Sam Dickinson leads the way with 7 goals and 15 points in 10 contests.

It might not be the torrid start that many were hoping for after Cowan recorded 96 points in just 54 contests last year before adding an even more ridiculous 34 points in 18 post-season contests. However, the season has barely begun, and the Mount Brydges, Ontario native can pop off at any point, as we saw at numerous times last season.

Something else that Cowan is working hard to try to preserve is his 44-game point streak during regular season action, which has remained intact dating back to last year. While he has set the Knights' franchise record, Cowan is still chasing Alexander Radulov, who holds the CHL record for longest point streak, set at 50 games. 6 games away from that mark, Cowan is looking ever more likely to become the new record-holder.

While I'm sure he's disappointed to have missed the cut in Toronto with the Maple Leafs, there's no question that Cowan would like to be as successful as possible in what will be his final season in London. Breaking the CHL point streak record would be a big step forward for Cowan and something that I'm sure he's actively looking to do.
