The Maple Leafs underwent significant changes this offseason, particularly on defense, with the additions of Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and newly signed Jani Hakanpaa, among others.
With new players come new jersey numbers. The Maple Leafs' website has updated the jersey numbers for the new arrivals, as reported by @dalter on X:
One notable number is Tanev's, which is No. 8, previously worn by Jake Muzzin. Muzzin was forced to retire due to a spinal injury, with his final games being the 4 he played in the 2023-24 season. Ironically, Tanev is a player similar to Muzzin in terms of defensive skill, experience, and have a difficult to play against style of play for opponents.
As the Maple Leafs prepare for the new season next month, their team will look quite different, not only because of the new jersey numbers but also due to the many new players making their debut as Maple Leafs.
