It's going to be an interesting offseason for the Toronto Maple Leafs and general manager Kyle Dubas. The Leafs' GM will be working hard to figure out the salary cap puzzle once again while making his team better. While the focus for possible cap casualties has been mostly placed on forwards Kasperi Kapanen, Alex Kerfoot and Andreas Johnsson, there could be one of defense too. Travis Dermott will be RFA this offseason and will get a pay bump on his current $863k salary. Could he be moved out to save more cap space because of the signing of Mikko Lehtonen? That's exactly what Sportsnet's Luke Fox was asked during his recent mailbag. Fox believes Dubas will have to do some shuffling to see how Lehtonen fits into the lineup but believes it would be smart to sign Dermott to a bridge deal if he can. If Lehtonen can't really adjust to NHL play, Dermott would be a reliable backup plan familiar with the Leafs' system."While it's possible Dubas dangles Dermott in a trade, I think the smart play is to re-sign him. The RFA didn't have a monster platform campaign. He loves it here, and he doesn't have arbitration rights. Plus, a flat salary cap won't do much for Dermott's negotiating leverage."
