After having acquired Tanev's negotiating rights from the Dallas Stars over the weekend, the Maple Leafs and Tanev have struck a deal on a 6-year extension.
Tanev, 34, has agreed to terms on the long-term pact that will pay him $4.5M per season.
Leafs GM Brad Treliving opted to stay back in Las Vegas following the NHL Entry Draft with several members of the Leafs' front office to set up for free agency from Sin City as opposed to flying home on Sunday. Fitting, as this one is a bit of a gamble.
Tanev, a very solid defensive defenseman, is going to be 35 in the first year of his 6-year deal, so it's not without its risks. However, the Leafs are obviously of the mindset that Tanev will not play out the full term of the deal and will likely spend the final year or two on LTIR, AKA "Robidas Island".
The Toronto native produced 19 points in 75 games last season, split between the Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars. While he won't light the lamp much for the Leafs this season, he'll provide a significant upgrade on the penalty kill.
Tanev's deal in Toronto comes with a full no-movement clause.
